Upgrades, enhancements and life extensions

A ship’s competitiveness shall be maintained throughout its lifetime. We provide expert help for performance upgrades, modernization and refurbishments to meet the upcoming legislation (CII, EEXI) and to remain competitive.

The competitive environment in shipping is constantly changing. Fuel prices have always been highly volatile, but now also fuel types are manifold increasing the pressure to respond.

Finding the right answer requires you to look out for the best options, analyze the said to be solutions for using them for your operation in question, and select the most suitable one for your fleet. This needs assessments of the state of technology of individual ships, the overall condition of the ship and especially the systems.

Once evaluated, we engineer suggested improvements, which we then implement during the ship’s future dry dockings. With the proper strategy and appropriate upgrades, the asset will remain competitive for longer and retain its value better.

Ship inspections

Does the technical condition of your vessel require assessment? Our highly skilled Assessment Team consists of experienced experts in various fields.

  • Inspecting and assessing the ship’s condition: the current state of the system and the need for replacement
  • Assessing opportunities for energy savings
  • Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting

We assess your ship’s condition from an operational point of view. The inspection is carried out by specialists of various disciplines. Based on the inspection, we summarize the findings, present possible shortcomings and suggest future improvements.

Our ship inspections serve to evaluate the possibilities of improving energy savings in the target ship. In this way, they also support the shipowner’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting strategy.

The key phases

1.
Defining the goal of the inspection
2.
Gathering the background data of the ship
3.
Conducting the ship inspection by a team of experts
4.
Compiling the report of the inspection

Environmental retrofits

Ever-stricter environmental regulations are forcing shipowners to react. We can help you to cut emissions to meet the rules and regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and local authorities.

  • Environmental retrofits, such as an SOX scrubber, SCR (NOx), particle filter (soot) or ballast water treatment (BWT) equipment
  • Energy saving retrofits, such as waste heat recovery or battery packs
  • Fuel change
  • Energy efficiency retrofits, such as bulbous bow modifications, ducktails and interceptors

In order to meet the latest environmental rules and regulations, your machinery may require a retrofit. This may involve a device to cut emissions, such as an SOX scrubber, or a device to enhance the machinery’s energy efficiency, such as a waste heat recovery system or a battery pack for peak shaving. A retrofit can also involve a conversion for an alternative fuel with lower CO2 emissions.

Emissions can be controlled in many ways, which is why it is important to find the best specific solution for the ship under consideration. For example, in addition to the power generation, the hydrodynamic performance of a ship can be improved to cut its emissions. This may necessitate an interceptor, a new bulb or an Elogrid tunnel thruster grid to meet the new operational speed.

To implement the selected options, the ship needs to be converted or retrofitted accordingly. We provide the needed support in every step of your project: from assessing various options to implementation.

The key phases

1.
Defining the existing environment by means of laser scanning
2.
Basic design and classification, conversion specification
3.
Engineering, detail design and material reservation calculations for the retrofit project
4.
Technical support for procurement
5.
Site assistance
6.
Documentation, inclining test, assessment of modifications

Conversions and refurbishments

We can help you enhance your ship’s earning potential and competitivity. This may require technical modifications or, on passenger ships, a refurbishment.

  • Facelift with a refurbishment of public and crew accommodation areas
  • Lifespan extension by modernizing the machinery
  • Capacity increase by lengthening the ship

Does your ship require converting due to outdated systems – or is it simply in need of a facelift? We are here for you. The scope of our projects varies, but often they involve multiple systems, such as piping, HVAC and electrical systems, not forgetting safety systems.

In some cases, lengthening the ship can be the key to improving the earning potential and extending its lifespan. This requires thorough structural and hydrostatic studies. Such a project involves all disciplines of ship design, although it is mostly limited to a specific area.

Passenger ships may need refurbishment, such as a visual facelift or new spatial arrangements. This may be limited to visible surfaces but often involves systems behind the ship’s lining, such as electrical and HVAC systems, which must be redesigned to serve the new outfit.

The key phases

1.
Ship inspection, which verifies the condition of the object and determines the related systems
2.
Agreeing on the scope based on technical requirements or, in the case of a passenger ship, on architectural design
3.
Creating the basic design according to the classification – society’s approval
4.
Detail design with material lists and prefabrication documents
5.
Support during the construction phase, site assistance

Site assistance

Do you need technical resources for the site office at the shipyard? We provide highly professional staff in all ship design disciplines.

  • Site team with specialists of all disciplines
  • Strong technical background from home office
  • Participation in FAT and other tests

Our service portfolio covers all disciplines. Beyond consulting and engineering, we can supply personnel to site teams during the ship construction phase. We have experience with both long-term work in site teams and quick inspection visits.

The site team can utilize flexibly all the resources and expertise of our office personnel. Our staff can also participate in inspections and tests, such as inspections of the steel block or other prefabrications at a subcontractor. Our services also include participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
