Elomatic main implementation partner in Tuusulanjärven Lämpö’s green investment – Electric boiler balances power grid

Elomatic has been appointed as the main implementation partner for Tuusulanjärven Lämpö’s investment project, which involves the construction of an electric boiler and a district heating accumulator in Tuusula, Finland. The project reduces natural gas usage, lowers costs, and enables participation in Fingrid’s reserve markets, thereby enhancing the stability of Finland’s electricity system.

With this approximately €20 million investment, Tuusulanjärven Lämpö seeks to reduce the production costs of district heating, which will be reflected in heating prices in Tuusula and Järvenpää. The electric boiler and heat accumulator will allow district heating to be produced when electricity prices are low and stored for later use. The boiler will have a capacity of 40 MW, equivalent to the heating power required by about 4,000 detached houses.

The solution will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, improve security of supply, and support the needs of reserve markets, facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the power grid. Frequency-controlled reserves are automatically activated within seconds when the grid becomes unbalanced. Tuusulanjärven Lämpö’s electric boiler will provide flexibility in such situations, which is crucial for the stability of Finland’s entire electricity system.

“At Elomatic, we recognized already five years ago that the electrification of heat and energy production was an emerging trend. Through our ongoing projects, we’ve already contributed to the implementation of 1,000 MW of electric boiler capacity. We see this as a great and modern way to advance the green transition,” says Karoliina Joensuu, head of Elomatic’s Industry business unit.

“Elomatic’s solid experience makes them an excellent partner for our project. We aim for the electric boiler, operating on emission-free electricity, to ultimately cover approximately one quarter of our district heating production,” says Clas Blomberg, CEO of Tuusulanjärven Lämpö Group.

Tuusulanjärven Lämpö and Elomatic signed the agreement in summer 2025. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with completion planned for autumn 2027.

Reserve markets

Fingrid procures reserves from Balancing Service Providers on a market basis for every hour of the year, ensuring the ability to balance the deviations between consumption and production in various power system situations. With clean energy transition, the procurement in the reserve markets is increasing, and significantly more supply is needed to cover this increase.
