Design of Icebreakers: Engineering for the Harshest Conditions
Building an icebreaker is not like building any other vessel. Every system, every structural choice, and every design decision must hold up where ice loads are unpredictable, temperatures drop below -40°C, and there is no room for failure.
At Elomatic, we have been involved in icebreaker design projects from concept to detailed engineering. In this session, we share what we have learned from real projects, what makes icebreaker design genuinely different from conventional ship design, where the biggest engineering challenges lie, and how cross-disciplinary collaboration between naval architecture, structural engineering, and machinery design shapes the final vessel.
We will walk through key design decisions that define icebreaker performance: hull form optimisation for ice resistance, structural dimensioning under dynamic ice loads, and propulsion system integration in extreme conditions.
If you work in shipbuilding, offshore, or energy infrastructure and want a practical look at what high-latitude vessel design involves, this session is for you.

Fuel costs and emissions regulations are putting pressure on ship operators worldwide. Elogrid™ is an innovative tunnel thruster solution designed to optimize vessel performance by maximizing side thrust while significantly reducing resistance and fuel consumption. Designed for both newbuild and retrofit projects, Elogrid supports a wide variety of vessel types to help extend the lifespan of onboard equipment and reduce the environmental impact of maritime operations.
The performance data is verified for example on Viking Line’s Gabriella. Results show fuel consumption down by 2.5%, side thrust improved by an average of 10%, vibration reduced by around 25%, and noise levels down by 2 dB(A) on upper decks.
In 2025, Elomatic commissioned an independent CFD evaluation from Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore (BVS) to validate these results. Their findings closely confirmed Elomatic’s own calculations, adding independent credibility to the solution’s performance claims.
This session covers how Elogrid works, the engineering and CFD process behind it, the BVS independent verification, and a realistic ROI analysis for typical vessel types.

Discover the power of Elogrid™: What can it do for you?
Customized solutions for every vessel
Every vessel is unique, presenting its own set of challenges and opportunities. That’s why our Elogrid solution is tailored to meet the specific requirements of each vessel, utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to customize the solution according to the vessel’s hull shape and operational characteristics, and improve hydrodynamic performance.
Elogrid is a cutting-edge solution crafted by our team, dedicated to maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact in maritime operations. By seamlessly integrating advanced engineering methods and innovative design principles, Elogrid offers a multifaceted approach to enhancing vessel performance.
The ship hull side thruster tunnel opening grids performances are evaluated in full scale using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for ship sailing at different speeds to find the impact in total resistance and in bollard pull situation with different thrust loads to find impacts inside thrust.

The maritime industry often ranks high when comparing global greenhouse gas emitters. But when measured by tonnage of transported goods, the benefit of the global shipping industry becomes even more apparent. Energy demands on the maritime sector require a bunker fuel to store energy for long periods of time in order to move the vessel and sustain the people onboard. Alternative fuels are one method to decrease the reliance on fossil fuels and to cut emissions. Low-carbon fuels can motivate growth and bring new opportunities to the maritime industry ranging from shipyards to component manufacturing, bringing a green transition to the business.
