How to succeed in a food industry investment

Investing in a new plant or production line is a major decision. Success depends on more than choosing the right technology. It also requires understanding how a project unfolds in stages, and managing it well. This article looks at what to consider before a project starts and in its early stages, so that planning and execution stay on track.

A successful food industry investment requires the right solutions for production processes, technology, staffing, regulatory requirements, and future growth needs. Together, these factors determine how well the investment serves the business years down the line.

Design and consulting firms are typically brought into a project too late. Starting the collaboration early pays off. Once a project’s goals, scope, and nature are locked in, it becomes hard to influence the bigger picture.

Timing the planning correctly also helps schedule the investment around production needs. When changes, installations, and startups are planned as part of the whole from an early stage, production interruptions can be kept to a minimum. The business can then keep running smoothly throughout the investment.

Skipping project stages costs more later

An investment project is built from stages: first concept design, then basic design, and finally detailed design. Each stage has its own purpose. Concept design defines the nature and goals of the operation, basic design covers the technical whole, and detailed design produces a construction-ready plant.

Skipping stages is not worth it. Moving straight to detailed design without proper concept and basic design work means building the plant on shaky ground. Changes then surface later, and they cost more.

Clear staging needs strong project management alongside it. When goals, decision points, responsibilities, schedule, and cost impacts stay visible throughout the project, the investment remains manageable, and decisions get made at the right time.

Good planning adapts to your specific needs

Good investment planning isn’t about copying a ready-made template. It comes from understanding the customer’s goals, production process, and future needs. That’s why every solution is built to fit the customer.

“Our design process moves forward in stages, in close collaboration with the customer. In workshop-style planning and development meetings, we map out needs, evaluate options, and develop solutions together. Along the way, we look at several different implementation models, which can be adjusted as the project moves forward,” Salo explains.

Equipment suppliers’ solutions are often an important part of the whole. But an off-the-shelf machine doesn’t always meet production, hygiene, or space requirements on its own. That calls for design expertise and the ability to adapt, so the solution fits the customer’s specific process and production environment.

Food production calls for specialized expertise

Investment planning in the food industry differs from many other sectors. Product and consumer safety are non-negotiable starting points. Hygiene design, allergen control, ingredient traceability, and cleaning all shape decisions at every level of planning.

“Even at the earliest stage, you need to think about where work happens and how it affects cleaning. Cleaning is a mandatory cost, and it shapes room layout, material flows, and how people move around,” says project specialist Tapio Karhu.

The production process itself also needs attention from day one, says Elomatic group manager Taneli Arola. “Technology, equipment, raw material and production flows, and documentation are all built around the production process. Food production is diverse, so planning requires a deep understanding of how it actually works.”

A well-planned plant is easier to work in

Food production is also labor-intensive. That sets it apart from project planning in many other industries.

In a labor-intensive environment, planning goes far beyond processes and equipment. Workers’ routines, movement, clothing, and hygiene practices all need to factor into space planning from the start. One common early mistake is treating space and operations as separate things.

“Space and process planning need to move forward together, step by step. The building and its layout support the manufacturing process. Right from the start, it’s worth thinking about staff positioning, process optimization, incoming raw materials, outgoing product, and waste handling,” Karhu emphasizes.

Planning usually starts by mapping out workers’ workflow and gathering their firsthand experience. That input is valuable, and there’s no other way to get it.

“Your staff will also feel more comfortable when transitions between areas are planned well. That affects the employee experience and productivity,” Arola adds.

Local and international regulations both shape the outcome

Hygiene requirements, ingredient traceability, water and energy use, and the regulations tied to them all directly shape production spaces, material flows, and equipment choices.

“Food industry legislation, standards, and sustainability requirements keep changing. A good design partner doesn’t just solve today’s technical questions. They help the customer anticipate future requirements and spot new opportunities early,” Salo says.

In some cases, meeting requirements also calls for computational analysis and optimization. Ventilation, airflow, or thermal conditions can be modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This makes it possible to prove a solution works and to find a setup that satisfies both regulations and production needs.

A trustworthy partner tells you what works, and what doesn’t

Successful investments come from managing the whole picture. The shared goal is to find the best possible combination of efficiency, safety, usability, and return on investment.

“Energy use, side-stream utilization, and circular economy thinking matter more every year. When you’re building a plant meant to run for 20 to 30 years, future requirements need to be part of the plan. That gives the customer room to optimize, grow, and develop production,” Arola emphasizes.
