Combustion and flue gas systems

With our flow simulation expertise, we provide a fast and cost-effective way to optimize power plant combustion processes and simulate flue gas and exhaust gas systems. We also assist in product development and troubleshooting projects.

You can leverage CFD for combustion modeling extensively, both in power plant design and upgrades. We help you gain maximum benefit from flow simulation in product development and troubleshooting projects as well.

Flow simulation is a fast and cost-effective way to examine processes that are difficult or even impossible to study using conventional methods. Our comprehensive power plant expertise combined with our CFD competence provides you with important and reliable information and understanding of power plant operation.

Flue gas and exhaust gas systems are closely linked to combustion and are a critical part of a functional process. We specialize in simulating and developing individual system components such as heat exchangers and SCR and SNCR systems, as well as explosion scenarios throughout the exhaust gas ductwork, where attention is paid to structural integrity, adequacy of pressure relief devices, and their placement.

Our flow simulation projects are always customized to each specific project. This ensures that our CFD simulations model exactly the right aspects and provide answers to your questions, whether they concern problem prevention or performance improvement, for example.

Simulating accident scenarios helped ABB enhance motor safety

Elomatic investigated the operation of an electric motor in a situation where hydrogen gas enters the motor block. The simulation helped estimate the pressure that burning hydrogen causes inside the motor and how to prevent the fire from escaping the motor. The results were used to optimize the motor’s dimensions to meet safety standards.

Finding the full potential of CFD

CFD, or Computational Fluid Dynamics, is a method that is often utilized only for the post-design phase, although it is very well suited for wider and efficient use throughout the design process. Optimal use of CFD analysis generally shortens projects’ lead times and improves product assessment. It also provides an excellent basis for preparing digital twins. In process modeling tasks, CFD is an excellent tool for studying the components, for example.

Not only colorful pictures – CFD saves time and money

Did you know that by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) you can save as much as 80 % in design time and 60 % in design costs? During the past 20 years, I’ve been lucky enough to participate in many interesting simulation projects both in Finland and abroad and have seen how clients have received instant help. But what is CFD really? Where can it be applied and why should it be utilized?
